Even the fundamentalism of our life has changed with the introduction of technology in almost every part of our lives. Starting from the early morning, our life is totally dependent on technology and hence has landed us to a stage where we just cannot live without the use of automated tools. To let the students learn the basics of these education processes, the colleges in India, have started introducing courses, which would train the students in the subjects pertaining to the latest demands of the industry.

The subjects have been modified and the curriculum has been set according to the requirement of the respective industry. Other than introducing courses as per the latest demands, the schools and colleges of India, have also started adopting the latest technologies to teach the students. Many new ways have been introduced in the country, which provide various opportunities to its students to enhance their skills and face the competition globally. According to ‘Education Hotspots in India Survey 2010’, Delhi and Bangalore have come across as the most preferred education destinations by Indian students. It covered all streams of education-arts, engineering, medicine, MBA and others to identify the popular choices among students willing to pursue higher education.

Some of the popular education destinations for students in India include Pune, Mumbai and Chennai. This one-of-a-kind survey conducted by an education and career networking site focused more on a student’s preference than on college rankings. It takes into account the perceptions of students as to where they would prefer studying across various streams. With more than 2000 students participating in the survey from both tier - I and II cities, it is clear that those from smaller cities are actively looking for information online and are interested in moving to another city for better education. Reservations under RTE Welcomed by Private Schools

The proposal to reserve 25% of the seats for under- privileged in private schools under right to education (RTE) has been welcomed wholeheartedly by private schools. Along with reservation, it implies no screening of applications, no fail and no expulsion policy. Even though everyone agrees with RTE, the implementation of the proposal is a major issue with the need for additional expenditure.

The only objection to the actual implementation of the reservation scheme is raised due to the problems related to it for both government and private schools. First, it needs huge resources (by government) and next, enforcing discipline (by private schools). On one hand, the government doubts if the whopping amounts of thousand crores required for facilitating the scheme can be made available. And on the other, schools are uncertain about the clauses of not failing the students and not performing their background checks. As it is, even when they voluntarily provide education to under served kids, they perform a background check.

It is believed that if the problems of funding and discipline are solved, the proposal is going to be received with much more enthusiasm. It is highly appreciated that the government is making efforts to uplift the poor and the literacy rate on the whole. It is encouraging the under privileged by extending various benefits like education loans at lower interest rates, reservation in schools and colleges, increasing the number of seats across courses and such other provisions. Undoubtedly, our government is working hard towards elevating the standards and quality of education in India.

Our country has made extraordinary progress on all fronts and holds the potential for much more. For this, imparting right kind of training at all levels is extremely significant and I guess our government has realized that by now!

Knowledge Utsav, the Largest R & D Conference in India

India and UK Join Hands to Prosper Education Sector

The education sector in India is reaching unprecedented heights with government signing deals worth crores of rupees with various countries. With the mission of spreading high quality education to students in India, the Ministry is collaborating with numerous foreign education institutions. Through various multi-million agreements and deals, exchange programs, workshops and other such efforts, the educations system is surely undergoing a transformation phase.

Some of the recent achievements in academic sector include India-US summit on higher education; investment of gargantuan amounts in technology institutes; extension of loans at cheaper interest rates through education loan camps; promotion of e-learning trends and adoption of Unique ID system. The latest feather added in the cap is finalizing of a 5 million pound deal with UK facilitated through the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). The two nations are coming together to work on developing and disseminating education among students in both India and UK.

The Indo-UK deal involves setting up of new educational institutes and holding skill development & leadership programs. It includes focusing on assurance and maintenance of quality of the courses offered to the students. India and UK are equal partners in the deal i.e. both of them have invested 2.5 million pounds each after signing the MoU today on July 28. University Grants Commission (UGC), the Commission that allocates grants to Universities, has funded the share of nearly Rs. 18 crores on behalf of India.

UK has expressed interest in developing education with India as a partner by including the proposed Innovation Universities of our country on its agenda. It wishes to set up new institutes besides developing such universities and take it further. Indian education system is acknowledged worldwide and so, many countries are looking forward for active educational tie-ups. Such programs are expected to boost India’s education sector tremendously and take it to uncharted territories.

Say NO TO RAGGING

College is a place, which gives new definitions to student’s life and welcomes the students to a new phase, where at every point they get to learn new things. Colleges in India are meant to make students learn different situations, so that they are further able to become competent enough to deal with the complications of life. One thing, which every student has to face is ragging, which is usually meant to introduce the students with the seniors and make them familiar with the college environment. But, with the changing times, the definitions and the ways in which the ragging is being conducted in colleges is changing drastically. Now ragging has become a tool, which is used by the seniors to humiliate the freshers and to make them realise their power. Due to which ragging has been started considered in the negative sense, and in fact it has caused a terror in the students, due to which they prefer not going to college in the first few days.

This has to be stopped, by any means it has to be. Though, ragging has taken the shape of a terrifying act performed by the seniors of the college, to harass the freshers in one way or the other, but somewhere, someone has to take a step ahead and put a ban on such degrading actions. There are many unions and groups formed in the colleges of India, which are for anti- ragging. But, it is still not working and many students are not following the rules and norms formed against ragging. They say ragging is for fun, but if we actually see, the kind of ragging practised in the colleges today are for the fun of seniors only, but for the freshers it becomes an embarrassment.

Therefore, before doing any such heinous act, first try and place yourself there, and feel the pain and humiliation, a student goes through, when he is being ragged. It is actually a crime, and moreover being a senior, you should welcome the freshers coming to your college in a cheerful manner and make them feel comfortable in the college environment. This would not only add value to your college, but you will also gain respect in the eyes of the new fuchas!!

Government Adopting Latest Technology to Boost Education System

The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry is coming up with a unique ID programme to monitor education system in India. This program is set to help millions of students across the country in various ways from their primary and secondary to higher education levels.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will store the entire record of a student’s education. It will be made compulsory to enroll students in the programme from the first day of their school. UIDAI, based in New Delhi aims to assign 12-digit universal identity numbers to more than 600 million citizens in India over next four years. Some of the benefits of adopting Unique ID are listed below:

-Monitoring the education system

-Speeding up the education loan grant process

-Smoothening the repayment of study loans

-Tracking school and college dropouts

Moreover, it will help check forgery as banks will not have to worry about students showing fake educational qualifications to avail loans. It will prove to be of immense help to poor students and can propel dissemination of education across the nation.

The Unique IDs will contain photographs, fingerprints and iris scans but since these keep changing up to 18 years of age, the biometric identity of parents will serve as a foolproof measure. And as soon as the student turns 18, his/her photograph and biometric prints will be treated final for all future uses.

The discussions between Union Government and UIDAI are nearing completion with two rounds of consultations already done in last three months. It is one of the largest government schemes in several decades and so, many highly experienced professionals are roped in to implement the task effectively and in time. Since ‘UID is not a one-size-fits-all product’, the biggest challenge is to market the idea among citizens from every caste, region and religion while creating ‘want’ for this identity number.

And to produce professionals for this field and train the students for this particular field, a new post graduate course called e- governance has been introduced by National Institute for Smart Government, Hyderabad. The programme has been announced by the institute in association with IT department of ministry of communication and information technology and TA Pai Management Institute. This one year e- governance course is specially designed keeping in mind the working attributes of the mid and senior level executives. This is to make them understand the e- governance system, from the view point of businessmen, general masses and the government.

The course will instil the information in the students with the use of all latest technologies and practical exposures to the e- governance system. Securing a seat in any of the DU colleges seems to be the toughest nut to crack in today’s scenario. The cut- off lists for DU released this year were unimaginably high and students have been drooling around the various colleges of Delhi University, to grab a seat for themselves in the course of their choice. Most of the colleges under Delhi University have closed their admissions after releasing the third cut- off list. It has been a heart breaking announcement for most of the students. But still there is a hope, as some of the colleges have released the fourth cut- off list for admissions. Special Scheme for Education Loans Launched by Bank of India

A special scheme is launched to disburse education loans to needy students across the country. Bank of India is organizing Education Loan Camps pan India for two months to cater to the education finance needs of the parents and children. This loan can be repaid within 7 years after a year of the course completion or six months after getting the job whichever is earlier.

The campaign was inaugurated on 6th July by Chairman & Managing Director of Bank of India, Mr. Alok K. Misra in Chandigarh zone consisting Chandigarh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Students from Chandigarh based colleges received on-the-spot sanction for education loans covered under Shiksha Suraksha Plan. The camps are run throughout the country as while South India is an existing education hub, North India is the upcoming one. With increasing movement of students for higher education, the financing needs have enlarged significantly.

Bank of India (BOI) holds 4th position with 5% share in the total outstanding in the Education Loan by all Public Sector Banks as on 31st March 2010. An overall growth of 29% and Chandigarh Zonal growth of 22.50% was witnessed at the end of last financial year 2009-2010. The education loan rates of Bank of India are 9.5% up to Rs. 4 lakhs and a further concession of 0.5% interest up to Rs.50,000 and 1% to loans over Rs.50,000 for girl students is also provided. Not only this, 1% interest concession is given to all the students upon service of interest during moratorium period of loan.

The higher education sector in India is developing at a swift pace with more and more number of students opting for post graduate studies. This is further encouraged by easy availability of education loans and finances that then support their career goals.

3 Day India-US Summit on Higher Education

The city of Mumbai is all set to host a three day India-US higher education summit on July 30 to celebrate the completion of 25 years of the Indo-American Society. Union Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal will inaugurate the event that is expected to strengthen Indo-US relations on education front.

Marking the golden jubilee of the society, this event is aimed at creating collaborations and exchange programs between education institutions, students and faculty from India and US. It will offer participants with brilliant opportunities to get together with important business, political and academic personalities at both national and international levels.

The Indo-US society works on creating frameworks of government policy and partnership models. It also helps in gaining access to networks that enable education providers to explore the huge untapped demand growing everyday. Over a lakh students from India go to US for higher education while several more lakhs wish to do so. This offers immense opportunities to education institutes in US to attract a huge chunk of Indian students to their country.

The primary objective of the three-day summit is to promote the Indo-US society as a facilitator of knowledge cultivation and talent development. It is expected to serve as a catalyst for research and technology that will be of value to students planning to pursue higher education. Moreover, the summit would focus on implementing policies that can bring change in the current education paradigm to match international standards. The cut-off list is out and this year’s cut–off is invariably high. The students are really in a shock to see the 5-6% hike in the cut-off this year as compared to the last years. The panic for the admission into one’s favourite college has already started. Students are getting very worried about their future and are now eagerly waiting for the next cut–offs. These cut-off lists of the college of Delhi university, plays the most important role in letting a student choose the right course and college for him. The top most colleges of Delhi University like, Hindu, LSR, KMC, Hansraj, have the highest of the cut-offs, because of which many students are facing the stages, where their dreams might get broken.

In fact, I heard on radio that for taking admission in the choice of their college, many students are even ready to change their course. I know college is important, but changing the choice of course, because of the unavailability of the seat in college of your choice, is something really not acceptable. I mean, how a student can compromise with his choice of his career. A student is said to give his best efforts in the studies, if the course he is perusing is of his interest. But, sacrificing your choice for the college does not seem to be a wise decision. The brand name of the college does matter, but I don’t think that should overpower the choice of your career.

Therefore, the decision of the course as well as the college should be taken very wisely. It’s a life time decision and affects the whole future of the student. Converting Women’s Colleges into Co-Ed

After centuries of ignorance, women are now getting their share in all sectors, especially education. There are, in fact, numerous only-women colleges all around the country to encourage and promote learning among females.

With the launch of women’s professional colleges barely a year ago, the institutes are already expressing a desire to turn them co-educational. This has given birth to questions like- were managements taking advantage of government incentives by opening all women colleges or are women really not interested in technology and business. AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), the umbrella regulatory body for professional technical colleges in India had relaxed various norms to promote women education. And, so the applications from institutes to turn co-ed have been turned down by the AICTE.

Not allowing women’s colleges to get co-educational, AICTE committee has asked them to submit an undertaking saying that they will never apply for the same. According to them, the acceptance of conversion would mean defeating the very purpose of the scheme and the relaxed norms. Moreover, it will not be ethically healthy to start the institute as all women and convert it later into co-educational.

But, the management of the institutes emphasized that seats could not be filled with only women as there are not many applicants. They added that most of the girls preferred co-educational colleges over all girls and so, they should be given permission for conversion. It is interesting to note that some of the colleges under the scheme have already been converted but the new acting Chairman of AICTE, S.S. Mantha said he would not allow it anymore discontinuing the conversion scheme.

AICTE’s stand on non-conversion of women institutions to co-educational is a welcome move. It shows the dedication and seriousness involved in promoting education for women across the country.

Huge Investments Made to Improve Tech Education in India

A whopping Rs.2,430 crores will be invested under the second phase of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) in India. Around 200 engineering colleges will be competitively selected to bridge the huge gap between the quality and education standards of the IITs and others.

The objective of this improvisation of technical colleges is to upgrade the overall standards of education. The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave thumbs up to the next phase of the scheme of education up-gradation running since 2003. IITs offer an unsurpassable quality of technical education in India and so, the efforts are being made to bring other engineering colleges closer to their superior levels. Along with assistance from World Bank (Rs.1,395.50 cr.), state and private institution (Rs.518.50 cr. and Rs.16 cr.) too will make investments in the government’s mega project TEQIP (contributing Rs.500 cr.) divided into three phases.

The scheme is 10 to 12 years long with first phase being completed in the year 2009 covering 127 colleges in 13 states. This project is open to all engineering institutions approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The committee CCEA chaired by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh has recently approved the proposal for investment in second phase of the project.

The mammoth investments made into upgrading quality of education in India is surely going to strengthen institutions resulting in improved learning outcomes and employment chances for graduates. It is all set to scale up post graduate education and demand-driven research and development and innovation. This would further lead to establishment of centers of excellence and imparting of pedagogical training as well. Such initiatives are definitely a key to add quality professionals to the already talented workforce of India while making it one of the most sought after human resource destination.

Indian Education Industry Going Places

The ever growing education market of India is expected to reach a staggering US$50 billion by 2015 according to industry estimates. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) in its recent study said that more than 50% of Indian middle class families have started saving for their children's higher education.

I. With nearly a 20 to 25% rise in the income levels, the saving ratio has considerably gone up reflecting potential for growth in education industry. Till few years ago, it was looked upon as an expense but the need for higher education has been felt increasingly by Indian middle class. India has one of the largest middle class in the world which is calculated to be about 300 million.
India’s total education market size is valued to be around US$25 billion of which higher education sector contributes nearly US$15 billion. It is expected to more than double in next five years as evaluated by Assocham’s projections.

II. Not only this, education boom in India is spreading its wings to Canada and UAE as well. Canadian universities and colleges are opening up their doors to welcome higher number of Indian students. Canada India Education Council (CIEC) founded by former Canadian foreign minister Pierre Pettigrew believes that their education system is among the best and there is a need to build the bridge between India and Canada to promote it as an education destination. CIEC will endeavor to operate exclusively and strategically within the burgeoning Canada-India education corridor by creating a social, legal and physical presence in both India and Canada.

III. A human resource meltdown has been predicted by Kapil Sibal, HRD (Human Resource Development) minister of India. He foresees a shortage of young professionals as the population ages and is making efforts to come over the deficit by engaging in talks with other countries like UAE.

CATE Exam to be held tomorrow !

Common Entrance Test for English, CATE which is to be held tomorrow, i.e. 9th June, 2010, was started two years back in 2008. The exam is for the entrance into undergraduate English Honours courses, in one of the 17 out of 47 colleges of Delhi University providing education in English honours. The forms for the entrance examination have already been sold out and the last date for the submission of the form was 31st May, 2010. Undergraduate courses in English honours have always been the top priority of the arts students. Also, many other students who want to opt for communication courses go for English honours at undergraduate level to make themselves aware of the technicalities of the English language.

CATE has come as a good option for students to get rid of entrance examinations of individual colleges. There are a total of 500- 600 general seats available in all the 17 colleges of DU, which are a part of the CATE examination body. Colleges like LSR, Miranda house are also a part of the CATE, which is quite profitable for the students, as would not have to sit for their individual entrance examinations and on the basis of their score card can get to choose the college of their choice. The results for the CATE exam will be declared on 19th June, 2010. Also, the number of students appearing for the examination this year are triple than what appeared last year, which shows the increasing interest of the students in the English Honours course.

There is no set syllabus for the CATE entrance examination, you will be judged on the basis of your knowledge in English literature and writing skills, which are must for a language student. This morning while listening to radio, in one of the stations the RJ mentioned DU as city in itself, a city in which finding a place for yourself has really become a tough nut to crack. The students find it a head breaking task to grab a seat for themselves in one of the few prestigious colleges of DU. There are entrance exams conducted by few colleges for the courses which has limited number of seats. These exams test the student’s capability and efficiency for the particular seat and to find out that their intelligence matches the requirement of the seat or not! This is also to give a fair chance to every student.

DU has become a brand in itself, taking admission in which is like a marathon, where you have to run and work harder to prove your capability for the particular seat. Students these days are really finicky about their career, that while taking admission in the colleges, they don’t even give importance to the route they are opting, what matters to them is the achievement of the end point i.e. Admission in a DU college. There are many admission agents present in the market, who claim to provide admission to students in the college of their choice. In such case, the college is of the choice of the student but the price is of the choice of the agent, which normally ranges in lacs. Yes you read it right, they charge money, it has actually become a business, a business, which stands on the cost of the other student’s career, which were eligible for the respective seat.

Money is powerful, no doubt, but overpowering others talent on the basis of money is no fare means. CBSE Class XII Board Results Announced

The results for Class 12 board exams are declared in the cities of Delhi, Allahabad and Guwahati. About 7 lakh students appeared for exams this year across the country and abroad- 4 lakh boys and 3 lakh girls approximately.

CBSE declares results on the results page of its website and has also set up a helpline number to ease the anxieties of the students. The CBSE exam results are announced in phases every year- the first phase saw results for Panchkula, Ajmer and Chennai regions on Wednesday, May 19. Chennai scored the highest overall pass percentage with 92.12% students clearing the exams. The pass percentage for regular students was 81.95% and around 42% for correspondence students.

Girls shone brighter all over again this year with a pass percentage of 85.28% while boys lagged behind with 75.90% only. The overall pass percentage recorded a drop of 1.13% which is 79.87% against 81% last year. But the good part was that the number of cheating cases too registered a drop this year totaling to 43 compared to 58 last year as reported by CBSE spokesperson.

Most of the prominent schools have come out with 100% results but the fall in pass percentage has become a cause of concern for parents and teachers. Steps will be taken to assure that it is not repeated next year by the school authorities and parents. The continuous familiarity to technology and other things has diverted the attention of students from studies to plenty of other things. The increasing exposure at young age to mobile phones, laptops, ipods and other gadgets as well as glamour in television and on internet has caused a precipice of priority. Students must give due importance to studies without compromising on the fun and play quotient as ‘All work and no play makes jack a dull boy’.

Education Loans May Get Cheaper

Higher education system in India is third largest in the world after China and United States. The government is now taking initiatives to promote higher education in India by bringing down the interest rates on education loan.

1. In an attempt to take the education of the poor to a higher level, government is planning to provide them education loans at 4% interest rate. This initiative is brought in to uplift the higher education of students from weaker sections of the society. The discussions between HRD Ministry and Planning Commission are still on as the proposal is in its preliminary stage.

Banks will provide this loan while a proposed funding corporation for higher education will re-finance the banks to help them compensate the loss. The mandate and functioning of the proposed NHEFC (National Higher Education Finance Corporation) is now being worked out.

2. In another effort to bring down the interest rates on education loans, government is working on a tax saving deposit scheme to fund cheaper loans. It has been trying to reduce interest rates to encourage higher quality education among students.

Investments in deposits under the proposed First Education Savings Scheme (FESS) will be eligible for tax exemption just like in public provident fund or life insurance premium. Savings under the scheme will be collected by commercial banks and transferred to the proposed NEFC for refinancing educational loans at cheaper rates. Banks will then transfer deposits under the scheme every month and get a commission for their services. NEFC will be set up with an initial equity capital and it will then raise funds through public deposits, domestic borrowings, grants, donations and bonds and debenture.

It is going to get easier to study at a higher level as soon as these proposals are passed and implemented by the Ministry.

The news today is the decision to appoint India born Nitin Nohria as the next dean of the prestigious Harvard Business School (HBS). He is going to be the first Indian and in fact the first non-white to serve the position in the long 102 years history of HBS. The coming up of new institutions would definitely add volumes to the opportunities available in higher education. This will help in potentially increasing enrolment and improvement of quality both directly and indirectly. But, this will help only if the foreign universities impart education in line with the goals, objectives and mission of Indian higher education.

The importance of creativity, new ideas and innovation has to be understood by our education system. This incidence makes me talk about the orthodox behaviour and throw a light on the poor state of mind; people still carry in the present arena of so- called modern and matured world. The expectations and the imposition of the dreams which the parents have been carrying from childhood of their kins, puts a pressure on the minds of the children, which in turn, makes the children take such major steps.

Time, from when the child takes birth in the family, to the time, when he or she prepares for his future, the family members, especially the parents starts expecting from the child, as what he would become in the future and what would be his potential goals and aims. The expectations which the parents has from his child, puts a lot of burden on the minds of the children, making them loose their selves and taking such drastic steps. This has not only happened in the cases of board exams, but students appearing for medical or engineering exams, have also been seen attempting suicides, from the fear of not clearing or because of not clearing the examination.

The parents somehow, attach their prestige and pride to their student’s educational achievements and qualifications. This is right at one point, but the parents must also try and understand the capabilities and strengths of their children and most importantly should prioritise the interests and the choices of their children. A country or even this world without women is impossible, it’s not only because of her biological powers, but there are many other qualities, which credits to the importance and need of women in the society. In spite of seeing Girls topping in all the fields of education, we do not encourage girl education. India from the starting has given importance and due priority to education, but still somewhere we as the citizens of the country, has backstabbed the nation towards its growth, yes by not encouraging girl education and putting them under the scanner of gender discrimination.

We always pressurise on education, but whose education boys education, girl’s education still takes a back seat when it comes for prioritising education and family, we always prefer girls getting married early, rather than completing their education and becoming self- dependent. The factor of marriage always overpowers the integrity of a woman, when we say that education is a birth right, then why don’t we implement it equally on all the children irrespective of their gender.

You must be thinking I am talking about past, things are not like the same now, but you are wrong still there are many young girls in the country, who don’t get to complete even their primary level of education, forget about completing the graduation or professional courses from a quality recognised college or school. Government has taken steps, it has opened schools, that too free schools or with very minimal fees, but its our duty now, to make it sure that these facilities are utilised properly and the laws passed by the government are implemented by each and every citizen, that is the only way we would be able to produce more of Kiran Bedi’s and Kalpana Chawla in the country, and help the country prosper. This is Deepika. This is my first post on education Cafe. Hope you will like my contributions/writings. As its my first post here so I will start writing on some unique & offbeat career paths.

There is a saying ‘Each cup of tea represents an imaginary voyage’ and this goes perfectly well in the profession of tea tasting. A tea taster must have his/ her tasting buds exceptionally active and should possess profound knowledge of cultivation and manufacturing processes used in a tea plantation. Support of science and interest in agriculture is essential to hone ‘the art of tea tasting’.

So, who exactly is a tea taster?

Simple. Someone who tastes tea. To give you a better idea, let me elaborate ---

Tea tasters need to sip in 500 to 1000 kinds of tea in a day to determine right kind of leaves that would make a perfect tea (Don’t worry, it’s just tasting not sipping the whole cup of tea). The job of a tea taster involves bringing the right color, taste and strength into the tea. This is done by checking out the leaves for their size, evenness, shape, dryness, twistedness and color. A tea taster detects the crispness and dryness of leaves with his sense of touch to calculate its longevity.

Who can become tea taster?

It is said that those with interest in exploring functioning of a tea plantation and knack for in-depth scientific knowledge of its processes may be suitable for the job. He/ She should primarily have excellent sensory and decision making skills to understand and differentiate the contents of tea samples.

Tea tasters have a unique job as we only begin our day with a cup of tea but they spend the entire day tasting tea. It takes almost three years to learn the art as it comes with experience and many more years to be an expert. There are various professional courses in tea tasting available that imbibe both traditional and modern ways of tasting tea.

Print ads pay according to the number of photographs used. Magazine spreads and billboard advertisements also pay well - reputed magazines paying around Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per photograph.
As far as television advertisements are concerned, depending upon the company's budget, a newcomer may get anything between Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000. For a well-known model, only the sky is the limit.

Study Routes for a career in Modeling:

Students from any subject or stream may enter this industry. There are a number of grooming modeling schools that have mushroomed over the last few years. Some ex-models run their own training schools such as Elle Modeling School, Mehar Bhasin School for models, Mehr Jessia and Madhu Sapre.

When Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai won the Miss Universe and Miss World titles respectively in 1994, it changed the world of Indian fashion as nothing before that had. It finally brought fashion out of the closet. A trifle more glamorous than others, perhaps, but a profession all right.

The modeling business can be broadly classified into a). ramp modeling, b). television modeling and c). print modeling, but more often than not, these areas overlap and most models do it all. To make it in modeling, what you need, besides the very necessary physical attributes, is a large network of contacts to get your first break. Once that happens, excellent communication skills are required to keep the network growing.

Apart from that, you also need to have a tough-as-nails attitude, a never-say-die spirit (because the struggle might be long and hard), and supreme confidence in your own self.

Prospects in Modeling:

Models find work in product advertising, mainly through advertising agencies, Live fashion shows, for designers, export houses, textile companies and clothing manufacturers.

Biotechnology is the controlled use of biological agents, such as microorganisms or cellular components, for beneficial use. It also includes the application of current scientific methods and techniques for the modifications and improvement of biological systems. It encompasses the exciting and rapidly developing fields like genetic engineering, monoclonal antibody technology and tissue culture.

Modern biotechnology has advanced to gene technology and beyond, and is an interdisciplinary subject covering biomedical research, microbiology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering. Its use and application is mainly in the following fields:

Medicine: To find out causes of diseases and to study the role of genetic transmission of diseases from one generation to another. Biotech researchers try to figure out the chemical changes that take place in the cells of body parts which signal the onset of various diseases such as tuberculosis, cancer, diabetes, mental disorders like epilepsy etc. Research related to identification and analysis of chemical processes like muscular contraction, reproduction, metabolism etc also relates to their job.
Agriculture: Biotechnology has opened up new opportunities for crop, tree & animal improvement. Tissue culture is helping agriculturists over come the limitations of genetic breeding, disease resistance, soil imbalance etc. Biotechnologists are encouraging a shift from chemical to bio-fertilisers & the development of bio-insecticides & pesticides. Biotechnology is also applied to developments in Horticulture for purposes of export, as well as in the area of animal breeding animal feed & improved food production for human consumption.
Environment: Causes of industrial air pollution, waste & effluent treatment, are major areas of concern being handled now through Biotechnology. Recycling of sewage sludge, microbial treatment for oil spills, toxic wastes & biological waste treatment of industrial effluents is increasingly being tackled by biotech firms.
Nutrition: Biochemists research and study the effects of certain food stuffs, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins when consumed in excess or in deficient quantities, on the human body.
Nuclear Engineering: The practical application of breakdown of atomic nuclei and/or other sub-atomic physics, based on the principles of nuclear physics. It includes, but is not limited to, the interaction and maintenance of nuclear fission systems and components— specifically, nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants, and/or nuclear weapons. The field may also include the study of nuclear fusion, medical and other applications of (generally ionizing) radiation, nuclear safety, heat/thermodynamics transport, nuclear fuel and/or other related (e.g., waste disposal) technology, nuclear proliferation, and the effect of radioactive waste or radioactivity in the environment.

Class XII in any subject is eligible for the diploma/certificate courses in photography.

After Class XII Students can learn photography along with their college degree, doing a part-time course.
