The entrance exam conducted for civil services in broadly divided into three parts:
Preliminary test – it’s a multiple type objective paper, divided in two parts, a total of 450 marks. The first paper is general studies for 150 marks, and in the second paper the student gets to chose from the following subjects - Public Administration, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Chemistry, Agriculture, Botany, Electrical Engineering, Law, Civil Engineering, Indian history, geology, Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Philosophy, Medical Science, physics, psychology, Public Administration, Zoology, Sociology and statistics. The language of the question paper comes both in Hindi and English a with time duration of 2 hrs.
Main test – the candidates appearing for this one is three times more then the available seats. Once the candidate obtains the min. passing marks as set by the commission he/she is called for a round of interview. The marks obtained here determine the rank of the candidate and hence forth is allotted his/her post.
Written test – the written test is broadly divided into 8 parts (details can be searched on net or various education sites), unlike the prelim test this one has essay type questions.
There is no obligation to present the subjects studied at the graduate level for the Prelims or Mains exam. Many candidates choose subjects that are completely new. The trends shows that History, Sociology, Physics, Public management and language like Hindi, English, Punjabi, Telugu, and Tamil are better scoring.
The last process is that of an interview, for 250 marks and the best part here is that it needs no qualifying marks for it. The board who interviews the candidates holds their career records for reference with them.
