Need for change in law education

Education in any field, needs to be reformed with the changing times and demands of the respective industry. I hope you would agree with me on the fact that, change in the work environment has lead to change in the course curriculum of the related fields. Same has been put by the Chief Justice of India, K.G. Balakrishnan, who says there is a strong need for promoting Inter- disciplinary agenda in the curriculum for law education. According to him, there is a need to focus on the subjects like sociology, political science, economics, psychology, history, languages and literature, which would help students in gaining knowledge about these subjects. Implementation of such subjects in the curriculum for law students can help them understand the deeper prospects of a particular case.

As a part of his speech in the first annual convocation of the Gujarat National Law University, he shared the difficulties he faced while solving cases, due to the unavailability of the knowledge about these subjects, during his course days. Also, he mentioned that law statements and judgements sometimes can not only be given on the basis of proves and witnesses, there are cases, where you need to perceive things on the grounds of social and economic backgrounds of the person. In such cases, one must also possess a great understanding about the human psychology and his actions and reaction at different stages of life. He stated that law colleges, should also focus on producing honest and reliable lawyers, who in future helps in the growth of the country’s economy in the right direction.

Changes like this, and many more revolutionary benchmarks in the studies for law, can surely help in reforming our society and its law structure. Everything starts from the ground level, so change in the teaching methodologies and course structure for the law students will definitely lead to a breakthrough in the ways, the criminal and other legal cases are solved.

If you have the flare in you to speak, have the witty side to your personality can catch details and put forward your point well then law is the career path for you. To become a lawyer one needs to have integrated knowledge of various subjects like – political science, philosophy, economics, history etc.

But the question here arises as to how one should go ahead and pursue this career? Well there are various paths to take up, the basic being after 10+2. One can go for a 5 years law course at bachelor’s level i.e. .BA+ LLB or after their graduation one can pursue LLB(hons); a 3 years course being offered by many universities and colleges, post which one can practice as a lawyer.

One of the option that is gaining a lot of popularity these days is a 5 year course in law including a BA degree i.e. BA LLB, as it gives the students an additional advantage. Students directly after 10+2 can enter this 5 year law course being offered by many reputed national institutes and universities.

There is a common test for law termed as CLAT – common law admission test, which is conducted by seven law schools at national level which are GNLU-Gandhinagar, NLSIU-Bangalore, NLU-Jodhpur, HNLU-Raipur, NLI-Bhopal, NALSAR-Hyderabad, and NLU-Kolkata having 30% seats reserved for girls.

One of the best law schools in the race is the national law school (NLS), it happens to be an independent body, the management of this law school is organized and taken care of by the legal professionals of the country. The chief of justice happens to be the chairman of the general council himself, accompanied by many retired supreme and high court judges with many veteran lawyers as well.

Besides these if one doesn’t wish to go for a 5 year degree course or a post grad. 3 year LLB one can pursue various diploma courses in law varying from 1 -2 years of duration. Many universities like NLS, Nalsar University of law – barkatour etc offer diploma courses like diploma in medical law and ethics, diploma in human rights, diploma in cyber laws, diploma in patent laws etc.
