Wishing You All a Happy International Women’s Week !

International Women’s week (IWW) is celebrated to acknowledge and celebrate the progress of women. On this occasion, world leaders and international organizations are promising to provide more rights and opportunities to women to achieve women empowerment and gender equality in all aspects.

International Women’s Day (IWD) was first proclaimed in 1977 by the United Nations (UN) and has now grown into a week-long series of commemorative events and activities across the countries. The theme of the celebration of year 2010 is
‘Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All’.

International Women’s Day holds a lot of relevance for women worldwide as they strongly feel that they are the real architects of the society. In every field, be it business, entertainment, technology or sports, women are today walking shoulder to shoulder with men. The empowerment of women has come a long way in India from being a nation that believed in an unknown existence of women following sati and purdah practices to a nation ruled by a woman President. We proudly assert our fundamental rights to equality, freedom and education.

Girls’ education in India has crossed many hurdles and reached a place where everyone has realized the importance of educating the fairer sex. From improved access to schooling to upswing in enrollment to declining drop out rates, Indian education system for girls in definitely seeing an upward trend. Female literacy rate in India is much lower as compared to male literacy but is all set to improve. There are various schools and colleges across the country only for girls, encouraging women education. The participation of women in all the sectors is increasing everyday but still a lot needs to be done in this regard.

I raise a toast to all the women, irrespective of their age and expertise, who have made this world a better place to live.
