Engineering - The Most Popular Discipline Among Young Indians


The idea of engineering existed in the world since ancient times when humans made important inventions like lever, pulley and wheel. The earliest examples of engineering marvel can be traced back to the ancient times. Structures like the Acropolis, Pantheon, Colosseum, the Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China are all examples of engineering marvels.

Later in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with the Industrial revolution, engineering as a field started developing when the first steam engine was built in 1698 by Thomas Savery. Slowly various branches of engineering started developing which included fields like mechanical, chemical, civil and so on. With the passage of time educational institutes were established that started offering courses on engineering. The oldest engineering college of the English speaking world is the School of Engineering, Trinity College, Dublin established in 1841.

In the Indian subcontinent, the history of engineering can be traced back to the days of the Indus Valley Civilization. Highly sophisticated drainage system and water storage systems exhibit the skills of the then engineers. Later, colonial India witnessed the growth and spread of science and engineering in leaps and bounds. Several Indian scholars were exposed to the western thoughts and science that gradually led to educated Indians accepting the discipline of engineering. Once recognized as a discipline, there increased a demand for engineering colleges in India. The first engineering college of the country was established in 1794, in Guindy, Tamil Nadu. It was affiliated to Madras University in 1859.

Later, as an independent nation, India entered into war with China in1962 (Sino-Indian War) and suffered huge loss and destruction. This led to swift changes in the country’s military policy. This was followed by India winning two successive wars against its neighbour Pakistan; one in 1965 and another in1971 where India helped in liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan’s colonialism. Definitely India’s engineers and military power was at the right place.

Post-Independence the country saw the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur, West Bengal. This opened the door to higher studies in engineering in India. By 1961, four more IITs were set up. With the passage of time, a demand for engineers increased and more and more young Indians aspired to become engineers. This led to the established of engineering colleges across the country. Engineering colleges were established in cities like Delhi/NCR, Bangalore, Kolkata and Mumbai. Gradually private players jumped into the field and became a dominant player. Many engineering colleges in Delhi/NCR are affiliated to private universities.

Even in an era of choices, engineering still dominates as a discipline which every science students would aspire to pursue after completing high school. There are more than 3000 engineering colleges in India, with a capacity of around 15 lakh seats across 36 courses, which have been approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).

It is a fact that, an institute plays a vital role in providing a good platform for students. Globalization has helped India in becoming the cynosure of technical optimism. Demand for Indian engineers is high both nationally and internationally. There are several engineering colleges in the country offering degree in engineering. Future Prospects in Mechanical Engineering in India.

The discipline of engineering that deals with the principles of physics and materials science is termed as mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering involves the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for designing machines and tools. It is one of the broadest and the oldest engineering disciplines and is often referred to as the mother of engineering studies.

An Overview

One of the most appealing features of mechanical engineering is that, this field of study is extremely diverse. Almost all inventions since the history of mankind have involved direct application of mechanical engineering. Traditionally, mechanical engineers dealt with several concepts that included things like robotics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, kinematics and many others that were required in designing state-of-the-art manufacturing units. Mechanical engineers are also responsible for contributing towards the development of several engines, power plants and other machineries. Mechanical Engineering—Degree or Diploma

Upon completing their high school studies,(10+2) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics one has to appear for the IIT-JEE and AIEEE for admission in various engineering colleges across the country. Upon completing a degree in mechanical engineering one can opt for an M.Tech or ME. In case anyone is willing to pursue an ME from any of the IITs, then the candidate will have to clear the Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers (GATE). Nowadays, several engineering colleges are offering dual programmes combining B.Tech and M.Tech while others club engineering with several management courses as well.

Apart from a degree, students can also opt for a diploma from any polytechnic institute. A diploma in mechanical engineering can be pursued after completing class 10th examination with at least 50 per cent marks. The duration of a diploma is usually spans three years and if one opts for a part-time diploma it can be completed in four years.

Those who want to pursue a diploma can also opt for an associate membership qualification from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, or Institution of Engineering.

Expenses/Scholarships

A graduate programme in Mechanical Engineering in a private institution would cost anywhere between Rs. 50000 to Rs. 200000 per annum. Nonetheless, if you are lucky enough to get through any of the IITs or a government engineering college, the expenses will be far less (around 30,000 to 40,000 per annum).

Moreover there are several scholarships available for meritorious students and students in need. Among Indian organizations, Indian Oil offers scholarships. Other institutions also offer scholarships in the same field.

Career Prospects and Remuneration

The job prospects in mechanical engineering are numerous. Mechanical engineers are required in designing, manufacturing, installing and operating systems that are used in innumerable industries. Both the government and the private sector employ mechanical engineers. Industries where they are usually employed comprise automobiles, space research, bio-mechanical and aeronautical industries.

The average monthly income of a mechanical engineer ranges somewhere between Rs. 10000 to Rs. 25000. Those who have a postgraduate degree can earn even more than this. Depending upon skill and experience, the pay package can go up to as high as Rs. 40 lakhs annually.

Pune Engineering Colleges finding it difficult to fill seats

The second most important city of Maharashtra, Pune is home to some of the finest educational institutes in India. Founded in 1949, the University of Pune has 46 academic departments, 269 affiliated colleges and 118 recognized research institutions. The university records as many as 170,000 students every year. Out of various disciplines of higher education, engineering is one of the most preferred courses. Some of the well-known engineering colleges in Pune include All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society's College of Engineering, Army Institute of Technology, Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering, College of Engineering, and College of Military Engineering and so on. Students from all over India, flock to Pune every year to pursue their higher studies in engineering.

However, recently a trend of seats going vacant was spotted. And gradually, getting a seat in any engineering colleges in Pune has become a cake walk for many. This is mainly because, as many as 40,000 seats are going vacant not only in engineering colleges in Pune, but also in other cities like Mumbai, Nagpur and Kolhapur. This trend has almost defied the purpose of an engineering entrance exam that is conducted by the state. With more seats than the number of students applying, most engineering colleges are literally struggling to fill up their seats.

As per records, as many as more than 2 lakh students appear for the engineering entrance exam conducted by the MHT-CET. Out of this, only 1lakh students ended up registering for the engineering admissions. There are a total of 1.48 lakh seats in engineering colleges in the state out of which many are going simply vacant.

According to reports published in October 2012, more than12000 seats in 114 engineering colleges went vacant at the end of first-year engineering degree course admission process.

The members of the University of Pune have raised concern over the high level of vacancy even at some of the well-known engineering colleges. This has led to the university not approving upcoming engineering colleges in the state from the academic year 2013–2014.

Not only Pune, but engineering colleges in other Indian cities are also facing the same problem. To cope up with the problem, many engineering colleges end up extending the last date of registration. Even the AICTE has expressed its concern and lowered the eligibility criteria for technical/engineering courses from 50% to 45% for the general category. However, even this step did not help much.

Many institutional bodies and universities across the country have approached the AICTE and requested it not to sanction new engineering colleges.
In spite of such measures, there seems that very little can be done to do away with this problem.

Career in Marine Engineering

The engineering of water vessels like boats, ships, oil rigs or any other marine vessel is termed as marine engineering. As a discipline, marine engineering involves the application of electrical and mechanical engineering in the development, designing, maintenance and operation of watercraft propulsion.

Requirements/Eligibility

In order to apply for a course in marine engineering a candidate must have completed high school with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The course on marine engineering is of four years duration.
Since marine engineering involves spending most of the time in high waters, it demands immense physical fitness and certain fitness standards have to be fulfilled. A candidate should at least be 150 centimeters in height and should be colourblind. Eyesight should be 6/6.

Other than the qualities mentioned in the previous paragraph, a marine engineer should possess certain qualities such as organizing, a good swimmer, good conceptualizing abilities, knack for playing with tools and most importantly a strong passion for sea travel.

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) for Technical Education

Between the various options available for future career in the field of science, one cannot afford to ignore the GATE test being the primary one for engineering. However, for those students who want to opt for other courses in different fields it really does not matter much, but if anyone wants to go for engineering, then, it really matters a lot. Before knowing much about available options, one must know the test itself.

GATE is the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. This is an all India level exam which includes the subjects related to undergraduate engineering and technology. The exam is conducted and controlled by the Indian Institute of Science and the IIT’s in India. All this done by these authorities as per the guidelines of the National Coordination Board-GATE along with Government of India and a few more authorities.

The performance and aptitude of any candidate willing to get into the field of engineering are judged by this test. Many of the top colleges in India accept the score of this test for giving admissions to the engineering students. The colleges offering the post graduate programs in engineering take the students who have scored well in GATE. The required assistance to these colleges is provided by an authority known as MHRD along with other government departments.

The Modes of Test:

GATE is conducted in two modes. One is online, and the other is offline. The online mode is the computer based test where the candidate appearing in the exam has to choose the right answer by clicking on it. The exam, which is in online mode, is conducted in January. While offline exam is a paper based exam in which the candidate needs to select the correct answer on a paper answer sheet. The answer sheet in this mode of exam is OCR type.

Eligibility:

The candidates appearing in the exam has to hold a bachelors degree in technology or engineering or architecture or any other field of science.

Those people who are Masters in Computer Application can also appear for this exam. Any master degree holder in the field of science is eligible to appear for the exam.

Exam dates:

The latest news about GATE 2014 is the inclusion of a new paper named as ‘Ecology and Evolution’ and the other thing that can amaze the candidates is that all the papers will be online now.

The announcement of the exam dates creates a wave of agitation among the candidates who have registered for it. Many of the students who have been waiting for the exam are now ready to give their best shot in this exam. The date is near now, and the online exam will be taking place in the month of February and will continue till March, which is not very far away. The exam will be held between 1st of February and 2nd of June.

Language Laboratories in Engineering Colleges

Apart from being the country’s commercial capital, Mumbai is a major center for learning in India. Established in 1857, the University of Mumbai is one of the premier institutes of the country. One of the most sought-after courses, there are numerous engineering colleges in Mumbai, one of them being the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

As India witnessed an IT revolution in the last years of the twentieth century, there was a huge demand for engineers. Students from all over the country started opting for engineering courses in various disciplines.

One of the oldest language labs of all the engineering colleges in Mumbai, it is used to impart language tutorials to the students. It offers a variety of functions such as recording, high speed copying, test preparation, intercom, student monitoring, teacher-student conference and so on. The lab is well equipped with CDs, cassettes and books meant all levels of learners. It is used by students belonging to the Preparatory Course as well as seniors. Some students voluntarily opt for Remedial English Classes. Exercises and lessons are recorded on a weekly basis. This helps students to get a better exposure to a variety of listening and speaking skills. Students who have a limited command over English end up benefiting a lot from these kinds of activities.

The language laboratory sessions include debates, extempore, word games, quizzes, skits and other activities. These activities are aimed at improving the communicative skills as well as the body language of the students with the overall aim of preparing them to face the real corporate world.

Teaching sessions include course in English Pronunciation, Listening and Reading, Pronunciation Practice, the English Language Laboratory Drills, and so on. The course also includes a section on Literature in English where students are taught English with the help of dramatized excerpts from literary works such as Othello, Macbeth, Pride and Prejudice and others.

Students at the language lab are also imparted training in Communicative English through online activities. These include online tests, reading comprehension, language polls, English idioms, phrasal verbs, grammar glossary and articles on languages. Spoken English classes are held at regular intervals that ensure that students are gaining mastery over the language.

Language laboratory is a huge phenomenon which is fast gaining grounds in the engineering institutes all across the country. Following the trend some engineering colleges in Mumbai have also opened up their respective language laboratories.

For admission to 1st semester/1st year diploma non-engineering subjects
The applicant must have passed 10+2 examination from CHSE, Odisha or any other equivalent board in any branch (Science/Arts/Commerce) with at least 30% marks (for Modern Office Management) or 35% marks ( for Hotel Management and Catering Technology), with 30% in every subject in the qualifying examination.  
Pharmacy aspirants should have passed the +2 Science exam from CHSE, Odisha or its equivalent board with 35% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics as approved by PCI and 30% marks in each of the subjects in the qualifying exam.
For admission to 1 year diploma courses in Film & TV
Biju Pattanaik Film & Television Institute of Orissa (BPFTIO), Cuttack offers diploma in various film & TV courses such as cinematography, sound & TV engineering. For admission to these courses the candidates should have cleared 10+2 in Science from CBSE, ICSE or any state board with at least 35% aggregate.  However, students with commerce and arts background are eligible for the Film & Video Editing course, provided they are through with at least 35% aggregate.
